A chemical formula is a representation of the chemical composition of a compound.

A chemical formula tells a person the types of elements in a compound, the number of each element type that is in that compound, and the total number of atoms that make up that compound. For example: in methane CH4, we find that there are two elements. One is Carbon and the other is Hydrogen. However, we also learn that there is only one (1) Carbon atom while there are four (4) Hydrogen atoms for a total of five (5) atoms in this particular chemical.

What information does the chemical formula for a compound provide about the submicroscopic structure of the compound?

You can find out the elements in it, and the number of each ions of each element. Example : Na2SO4 (Sodium Sulfate) You can find out from this formula that this compound contains : 2 Sodium ions (Na2) 1 Sulfide ion (S) 4 Oxide ion (O4)

What is chemical formula of bitumen?

Bitumen (asphalt) (tar) is a mixture of chemicals left over at the end of a distillation process. As it is not a pure substance (a single chemical), we cannot provide you with a chemical formula.

The chemical formula for an ionic compound represents the?

The smallest numbers of ions of the proper kind that provide a correct elemental composition for the compound with electrical charges balanced. For example, magnesium cations have a charge of +2 and chloride anions have a charge of -1, so that two chloride anions and one magnesium cation are required to provide electrical neutrality, resulting in a formula of MgCl2.

What is the chemical formula for Fe 3 plus and Br-?

Iron ions, Fe+3, will bind to oxygen ions, O-2, in a ratio that depends on their charges since the total positive charges in the molecule must equal the total negative charges. The eventual number of positive and negative charges is found by the least common multiple of the charges. In this instance, the charges are 3 and 2. The least common multiple is 6, so two atoms of the Fe+3 are needed to have a total positivie charge of +6, and three O-2 are needed to have a total negative charge of -6 to provide the electrical balance. The resulting molecule is Fe2O3.

What is an emperical formula?

An empirical formula represents the simplest whole-number ratio of atoms in a compound. It does not provide information about the actual number of atoms present in a molecule. To determine the empirical formula, one must divide the subscripts of the compound's molecular formula by the greatest common divisor to obtain the simplest ratio.

Why is fructose used instead of glucose in diet foods?

Though glucose and fructose have same chemical formula C6H12O6 thy have different structures. The physical, chemical and biological properties of a molecule depends on the structure of the molecule. If molecule can provide H+ ions (acids) they show sour taste. The H-atom of chlorofom CHCl3 is responsible for the sweet taste of chloroform. the sweetness of sugars are due to H-atom of particular polarity.

The prefix used in a chemical name tells what?

the prefix can provide information towards the geometric shape of the chemical (how molecules are laid out).
