To understand why the PlayStation was invented, one must look at the origins of the PlayStation. Nintendo originally approached Ken Kutaragi and Sony in 1988 to create a CD-ROM drive for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). This was because the solid state memory cartridges used in the existing SNES would not have a suitable amount of storage for more advanced games in the future. On the other hand, Sony had the expertise in optical storage mediums, inventing the Compact Disc (CD) with Philips Electronics in 1982. Thus, by 1991 Sony had completed a prototype SNES with built-in CD drive which they were to unveil at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in June of that year. However, the night before the unveiling, Nintendo decided to alter the contract as they felt a partnership was not necessary. This left Sony with a multi-million dollar investment on a device that they could no longer market since selling it in its present state would require licensing from Nintendo, which they surely would not have been granted. As such, Sony President had Ken Kutaragi take the existing CD drive design and turned it into the PlayStation so that Sony could sell its own gaming system. By the end of 1994, the PlayStation was completed and was brought to market soon after.
Video Games were gaining in popularity and he felt he could design a better game system and make a large profit for his company.
