Surrealism is meant to be and artistic representation of the unconscious mind and is a response to the Dada movement. Sigmund Freud's work with free association and dream analysis was a heavy inspiration. Surrealists also often aligned themselves with communism and anarchism.

The art movement called Dada was a precursor to Surrealism. It questioned "what is art" by making "non-art" The surrealists took this idea and ran with it years later, keeping the "non-art" aesthetic, but giving it meaning. Marcel Duchamp is one of my favorite Dada artists, who also was a good bridge between Dada and Surrealism.
Max was inspired by French artwork and developed surrealism from his influence in French art. Giorgio de Chirico inspired Max in his early Surrealism work and inspired him to create the artwork "The Elephant Celebs". He was influenced by members of the Dada group he led because of their radical and revolutionary pieces of artwork.
