blue devils, In 1934 Basie formed his own Kansas City group, and signed a national record contract in 1936 with that group. Basie's big band developed away from the pure Kansas City style in the 1940's, his arrangements remained in the twelve bar blues form, embellished with swing riffs behind the soloists.
In 1928 he was an organist in a silent movie theater. that is where he met Walter Page and the Blue Devils, when that band broke up in 1929 he was hired by Benny Molten's band as a piano player. Then when Molten died in 1935 basie took over the band and they called themselves Barons of Rhythem
