What intestine is also known as the colon?

Traditionally, yes, they are considered the same. Specifically, colon is a non-specific term that is sometimes used to denote the large intestine.

Typically, the different portions of the intestines are named specifically - the duodenum (which has 3 parts), jejunum, ileum, cecum, ascending, transverse, and descending colon, sigmoid and rectum - depending on the specific part to which you are referring.

All I know is that in German, the large intestine is called "Dickdarm", literally "thick intestine" while the small intestine is the "Dünndarm", "thin intestine". While a lot shorter, the "large" intestine is thicker, conversely the "small" intestine is thinner albeit a lot longer. It's a slightly skewed use of "large" and "small" here, it seems.

Why the large intestine shares a designation with two vertical dots used as punctuation mark is beyond me though, any clues welcome.
