Tricky question.

12 Volts, if referenced in AC, would mean a root-mean-squared (RMS) value of 12 Volts. It would also equate to a maximum voltage of about 17 volts.

Roughly speaking 12 Volts AC is equal to 12 Volts DC. Just remember that 12 Volts AC isn't always 12 Volts....
