What is the end of the loaf of bread called?

In the UK it can be known as the crust.

I believe the official term is the "heel" of the loaf.

When I was growing up we called it the hupfermumber.

This is one that me and my partner always argue about! I've grown up knowing this as a knobby and he calls it the topper.

Those are called the heels. The entire loaf is enclosed in a crust; it's part of the baking process. When you slice the loaf, you end up with those two pieces. It is good to leave them in place, because they protect the softer, inner slices of bread and allow them to stay soft.
