I don't know how it would be expressed in foot pounds or "ergs", but I do know that an adult (24" carapace) snapping turtle can snap a broom handle in half with no problem - I have seen it myself.
According to the Wikipedia entry on the species - the bite force "...has been recorded at 158 +/- 176.51 N (703±785.16 lb/f)..."
Common snapping turtles have a bite force of about 1000 pounds.(one thousand pounds)
To protect them from predators
No, but they can bite!
Well, if they bite I would call them snapping.
Hell yeah that thing will bite your face off if it has the chance
I would not reccommend swimming with the snapping turtles. You can safely swim in a pond or river that has snapping turtles living in it. Snapping turtles bite if you get too close, though, and their jaws are very strong. A snapping turtle could bite your finger off. So swim away, but don't get too close to the turtles!
No, they will get nippy and mad. They might bite or even kill the other turtles.
Not very dangerous! Snapping turtles can bite your hand off if you provoke them.
As babies snapping turtles get along with all kinds of turtles. once the snapping turtle gets big enough, it starts to realize it is stronger and bigger than the other turtles. At that point it gets very aggressive. I have a 6 month old snapping turtle that is very calm and stays away from the other turtles. My friend's snapping turtle though, is another story. His snapper is always trying to bite the other turtles limbs but is to slow is the deep water.
Crocodile snapping turtles do not exist. Only Alligator snapping turtles do.
A 13 foot alligator can bite with a pressure of about 3,000 lb. That is one and a half tons of total pressure! Saltwater crocodiles can have an even stronger bite force of 3,700 lb.
snapping turtles do have cells.
Turtles are omnivores.
they have bitten people, but they bite whatever they feel is a threat to them. It's for self defense, not because we look tasty
