The U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child (Convention, or CRC) is the most widely adopted human rights treaty in history, adopted by 193 nations. It was introduced in 1989 and came into effect with ratification by 20 nations in 1990. The Convention calls upon State Parties (cooperating nations) to take responsibility for "the civil, cultural, economic, political and social rights" of children (source: UNICEF). The Convention has not been ratified by the United States, as it is incompatible with the U.S. Constitution, which refrains from giving the national government authority over families and children and which reserves family law to the fifty States. In ratifying nations, it has met with varying degrees of application and success, as some ratifying nations have never reflected the Convention's principles in domestic legislation, while others have followed it more dutifully. The Convention established the U.N.
