Faith Ringgold is best known for her unique story quilts. The center of each of these was an acrylic painting on canvas. Instead of fastening the painting to wooden stretcher bars, she edged each with a fabric border. The other unique addition to her story quilts was the story itself, handwritten onto the "quilt" often on the fabric borders. Her story quilt titled Tar Beach was the basis for her very popular and award-winning children's book of the same name.

∙ 10y agoIt would be difficult to choose just one. Faith Ringgold is a well-respected African-American artist, as well as a former professor of art. Her work has been seen in numerous museums. She is known for painting story-quilts, and has also done sculpture and performance art. Much of her work draws on her African-American heritage, but she has also been influenced by the art of other cultures. In addition, she has written or illustrated fourteen Children's Books. She has received more than 75 awards, including 22 Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degrees.
