Forrest Gump was panned by some critics and was even called a 'roach' of a movie by one. Others considered it, if not genius, as least 'magical' (Roger Ebert). But none could deny it's power to move an audience and it's enormous clout at the boxoffice. Tom Hanks must have been psychic when he refused his regular salary in exchange for a cut of the profits. $70 million was far and away much higher than his standard $15-$20 million per picture.
