The popular group Irish folk dance would be set or ceili dancing, often done in groups of eight. As to THE popular dance, let me tell you a joke: How many Irish set dancers does it take to change a light bulb? Eight, one to screw the light bulb in and seven to say that is not how we do it where I come from. Irish set dancing will vary from County to County, town to town, bar to bar. Getting agreement in the bar is no guarentee. My advice, see what the locals are doing, try to imitate and have some fun.
Many different names. The most popular (and the most fun) is called a "jig".
Some people call it riverdance. I call it plain old Irish dancing though. ;) IT'S SO FUN!! :D

Step dancing
Hip hop by itself is healthier than Irish step dancing, because you use your whole body, practice good balance, and must have upper-body strength for the power moves. Counting both hip hop and jazz, yes, they definitely provide more exercise than Irish step dancing, since you only move your legs in Irish step dancing.
It has changed from the original form of Irish step dancing to our modern day tap dancing
