Ralph views the conch as a symbol of order, as a link with the society they have come from. The conch calls the boys to meetings and the conch is the symbol that is held by a speaker at the meetings. Jack in contrast sees the conch as a restraint. It is constant reminder that under the democratic system which it represents Ralph is the rightfully elected chief and always will be.
