Operation Star took place in February 20 1943 and mid-March 1943 in the Ukraine. German troops under the leadership of Field Marshall Manstein halted the Soviet advance that followed the Red Army's victory at Stalingrad. Tank armies under Marshall Popov advanced far into German-occuppied territory, ultimately exposing their flanks to a well timed armored counterstroke by the Germans. Stalin refused to allow his men to retreat from the pocket they found themselves in resulting in major defeat for Popov. Poor weather conditions forced a halt to the fighting. After Operation Star, the Russians dug in and regrouped. The exhausted German Army also brought up reinforcements during the lull. The bulges in the front provided staging areas for both sides that layed the groundwork for the Battle of Kursk, which took place in the summer of the same year.
