There were two Czars named Nicholas. Czar Nicholas I ruled Russia from 1825 to 1855. Most notably, he ruled during the Crimean War but died before it ended.
The more famous of the two, Czar Nicholas II, the grandson of Nicholas I, ruled Russia from 1894 to 1917. His fame came from being the last of the Romanov Czars when he abdicated the throne during the February Revolution of 1917 in Russia. In July 1918, during the Russian Civil War, he, the Empress Alexandria and all their children were murdered by forces of Lenin's Red Army in order to prevent their rescue by forces of the opposing Russian White Army.
Czar Nicholas II was the last czar of Imperial Russia (he was of the Romanov family).)
Nicholas, his wife, Alexandra (a granddaughter of Queen Victoria of England) and their 5 children (4 daughters, 1 son) were shot to death and their dead bodies hidden.
He was the eldest son of Alexander III, and Empress Maria Fyodorovna. Together with his brother George, they were educated at home - though Nicholas manifested inability to absorb all that his educators taught him.
Alexander III, who was believed to be the epitome of an autocratic monarch, was succeeded by his son on November 1894. Nicholas had always lived on his father's shadow and he had come to the throne with little experience and expertise.
He was the father of four girls and a boy - and married to Princess Alix of Hesse-Darmstadt; granddaughter of Britain's Queen Victoria who changed her name to Alexandra when she converted to Russian Orthodoxy.
Finally, faced with overwhelming popular demands for democratic reform, Nicholas was forced to abdicate in 1917. He and his family were killed by Bolsheviks the following year. Microsoft ® Encarta ® 2006. © 1993-2005 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
