The neutrality of the USA was a sensible aim for any country not wanting to get involved in a European war. President Franklin Roosevelt helped Britain as best he could by providing aid in exchange for Britain allowing the USA to establish bases in parts of the British Commonwealth. When Japan bombed Pearl Harbour, declaring war on the USA, and Hitler declaring war on the USA some days later, the USA was able to become a major ally and come directly to aid Britain with food and war supplies and armed forces.
