The term Version Control is commonly used in product design, engineering and software development. It is to do with the different revisions or versions of the product design or part of the design or a particular software. The software or product evolves over a period of time mostly more than one person or teams work on the same. It is important that different versions of design or software module and related documentation are maintained and identified with unique identifiers or numbers and backed up. In simple terms The process of managing these revisions is known as Version Control. For softwares and designs which are maintained on computers and servers, there are many tools available for version control, which track various versions of design/software/files. They have features like tracking, tagging and locking files which are checked out for updates by one of the team members in team environment.
