In the US, Woolworth's originated as the F. W. Woolworth Company, a chain of "five and dime" (5¢ and 10¢) stores, which operated from 1879 to 1997. In the mid-20th century, it was one of the largest retailers in the US. Subsidiaries existed in Britain, Ireland, Germany and Canada; most are now defunct.

In 1997, the company decided to focus entirely on its Foot Locker brand, and in 2001 the company changed its name to Foot Locker, Inc.
Woolworths is an Australian Fresh Food group that aims at providing fine quality food at every day market value to make it available to the average grocery store consumer.
