Based on a 4.0 scale a 2.5 GPA (Grade Point Average) is typically associated the letter grade of "C". The 2.5 is a ratio which was derived by a the total grade points attempted (typically the credit hours of the class) divide by a summation of the grade points achieved (passed). This is also known as an improper fraction depending on how well or poorly the student performed.
For example if you took four (4) three (3) credit hours class one is attempting twelve (12) grade points; each class independent there are a number of ways to 'achieve' a 2.5 GPA. For example:
History letter grade "A" --> 4 Grade Pts * 3 Hrs = 12
Biology letter grade "C" --> 2 Grade Pts * 3 Hrs = 06
Math letter grade "F" --> 0 Grade Pts * 3 Hrs = 00
English letter grade "A" --> 4 Grade Pts * 3 Hrs = 12

if your scale is on a 100 point scale just divide by 25 because 100/4 is 25 and you have a 3.62 GPA
