Every Dog is an individual and their behaviour will be determined almost completely on how they have been raised and taught to behave. A Dog of any breed can be a child's best friend, so long as they have a calm and assertive master who teaches them right from wrong. It is always a good idea to buy a puppy so that the Dog can grow up with the children and can learn how to act around them. It is also important to ensure that any children know how to behave around Dogs and do not pull the Dog around too much. Of course, never leave a Dog unsupervised with children. I'm confident that an American Bulldog/Staffy would be a great companion for your kids so long as you are responsible and raise it to be friendly.

Is an American bulldog a restricted breed?
As far as I can find the American Bulldog is not a restricted breed, at least not in my area (Ga). But because of recent legislation there a lot of places that now require spay/neuter , so it is harder to find animals in some places. Many people confuse the American Bulldog with the Pitt Bull, who is believed (regardless of fact) to be a dangerous, violent breed. While American Bulldogs were once used as working dogs, or even in the bloody sport of bull baiting, they are gentle, great with kids, and recognized for their acts of extreme courage and heroism regarding their owners. I read the previous persons answer to this question and was outraged. I own an American and can't believe what that person had to say about them. It is hard to imagine them ever having owned one themselves with that to say, but if that was the case I think it is a problem with the owner maintaining alpha role and controlling their dog, thus any dog would be just as unruly in their care.
