A booster transformer is a 1:1 ratio transformer. They are mounted on overhead line structures, with the primary side attached to the contact system and the secondary side attached to the return conductor. The 25kV voltage on the primary side induces a 25kV voltage into the return conductor which helps reduce electromagnetic interference with other electrical equipment namely signalling and telecomms.
In the UK there are two common types - breathable which were installed with the first major electrification program, and sealed which are used to replace the old Transformers.
Manufacturers include Alstom and ABB.
Weights are in the 2800-3050kg range.
All transformers are oil filled.
