A covenant is a promise. For example, the rainbow is a sign of the covenant made between God and His people after the great flood. Each time we see a rainbow, it is a reminder of God's covenant to us that He would never flood the whole earth again.

A biblical covenant is a mutual agreement between two or more persons, as witnessed by God, and recorded in The Bible. The word "covenant" comes from the Latin com -together, and venire -come, thus it is a coming together or meeting of minds in agreement. Such covenants stipulate what acts are to be done, or refrained from, by all or one of the parties. * Malachi 2:14 "Yet you say, Why? Because the LORD has been witness between you and the wife of your youth, against whom you have dealt treacherously: yet she is your companion, and the wife of your covenant." * Ezekiel 17:12-14 "Say now to the rebellious house, Know you not what these things mean? tell them, Behold, the king of Babylon has come to Jerusalem, and has taken its king, and its princes, and led them with him to Babylon; And has taken of the king's seed, and made a covenant with him, and has taken an oath from him: he has also taken the mighty of the land: That the kingdom might be base, that it might not lift itself up, but that by keeping his covenant it might stand." * Joshua 23:16 "When you have transgressed the covenantof the LORD your God, which he commanded you, and have gone and served other gods, and bowed yourselves to them; then shall the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and you shall perish quickly from off the good land which he hath given to you." God imposed a covenant upon Himself for the reconciliation of sinners. * Deuteronomy 7:7-10 "The LORD did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because you were more in number than any people; for you were the fewest of all people: But because the LORD loved you, and because He would keep the oath which He had sworn to your fathers, has the LORD brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you from the house of bond-men, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Know therefore that the LORD your God, He is God, the faithful God, who keeps covenant and mercy with them that love Him and keep His commandments to a thousand generations: And repays them that hate Him to their face, to destroy them: He will not be slack to him that hates Him, He will repay him to his face." These are the Eight Biblical Covenants of God: # Edenic (Genesis 1:26-28) - conditioning the life of man in innocency. # Adamic (Genesis 3:14-19) - conditioning the life of fallen man and promising his Redeemer. # Noahic(Genesis 9:1-17) - establishing the principle of human government and confirming the order of nature. # Abrahamic (Genesis 12:1-4;13:14-17;15:1-7,18;17:1-8) - founding the nation of Israel and confirming the Adamic promise of redemption. # Mosaic(Exodus 19+) - condemning all men, under the commandments, judgements, and ordinances of the law, as sinners. # Palestinian (Deuteronomy 28 - 30) - securing the final restoration and conversion of Israel. # Davidic (2 Samuel 7: 8-17) - establishing the perpetuity of the Davidic family, fulfilled in Christ. # The New Covenant (Hebrews 8:6-13) - resting upon the sacrifice of Christ and securing the eternal blessedness under the Abrahamic Covenant, of all who believe. It is absolutely unconditional, final and irreversible under grace, with no responsibility committed to man. .

A covenant is a SOLEMN promise God has made to His people and also His love and grace for His people. An excellent example is found in Genesis chapters 7-9 when God had made a promise that there will be NO MORE floods. And this Solemn Promise made it's continuing presence in the New Testament of the Bible. Another Great example in the LOVE aspect is when God has loved us SO DEEPLY He made His only begotten Son, Jesus die on the cross for us! To have a Relationship with Him and, to be Saved in His Name!
