The Hovawart looks somewhat like a Golden Retriever. The Hovawart has a strong, deep-throated bark. They will be calm inside the house provided they receive enough daily exercise. Determined, obedient, and affectionate, especially towards its master. Loyal to the family. Excellent with children when they are well-socialized, well exercised and see humans as alpha. They are highly devoted and have a strong sense of territory and will not generally wander far away. Remaining playful and puppy-like in its old age. Reserved with strangers but is a pleasant family dog. Good natured and even-tempered. Brave, this dog is protective, alert, and a good watchdog. It will protect your property against intruders with great passion. When its handler indicates that visitors are welcome, it will accept them immediately. Hovawart have good scenting noses. Intelligent and they can be trained to a high degree, learning quickly what you expect of them. The best results are achieved with extremely consistent, loving andwell-balanced training. Unneutered males can be very challenging to handle. The Hovawart is a dominant breed, who requires a firm, experienced owner. If owners are not there to communicate their leadership they may be aggressive with other dogs but does well with non-canine pets in the household if well socialized. If owners do not treat them in such a way that their canine instincts are fulfilled with the proper leadership and release of physical and mental energy it can cause them to start fear biting, or be rather timid. Hovawarts are ideally suited for tracking, avalanche rescue, watchdog, and defense situations. This is a very healthy breed. However an underactive thyroid is wide spread in European lines. Hip dysplasia sometimes occurs. Hovawarts are not recommended for apartment life. They are moderately active indoors and will do best with at least an average-sized yard. They prefer cool climates and can sleep outdoors. It is an outstanding watchdog, especially for stables, fields, and country houses. The Hovawart needs to be taken on a long as they are taken on a daily walk, jog or run. While out on the walk make sure the dog heels beside or behind the person holding the lead, never in front, as instinct tells a dog the leader leads the way, and that leader needs to be the human. Regular long walks, hikes, and chances to run and play off the lead will be greatly enjoyed and will keep them healthy. Run easily over difficult terrain. The Hovawart's coat is easy to groom. An occasional brushing and combing, taking extra care in the places where tangles might form, is all this breed needs. It is an average shedder. The Hovawart originates from Germany. It is a very old working breed descended from the Newfoundland, Leonberger, and possibly the Hungarian Kuvasz. The goal of it's developers were to re-create the great estate guarding dog of the Middle Ages. The Hovawart is rare in the USA, but popular in Germany. Eike von Repgow wrote about the "Hofewart," as an estate guard dog in the Sachsenspiegel. They were also illustrated in writings in the 1400's tracking bandits. The breed almost became extinct in the 1200's, however by the 1920's a breeder by the name of Kurt Konig worked on a program reconstructing the breed. His efforts were successful and the breed was recognized by the German Kennel Club in 1937. Some of the Hovawarts talents are watchdog, schutzhund, search & rescue and tracking. They live for between 10 and 14 years.

Is the Hovawart a good breed for inexperienced dog owners to own?

For first time dog owners, this breed may not be the most ideal choice. Hovawart dogs require continuous training, that is strict but loving. They are a working breed and so they need to be kept active constantly with dog activities. This breed is also very helpful in tracking, search & rescue and other working dog activities. Ironically, Hovawarts do not have the "eager to please" nature that most other working dog breeds have. They can think and act on their own, which is why you need to realize that the Hovawort does not work for you, but instead works with you. Therefore need to be trained by an expert, who can take a positive approach to reinforcing training and obedience. They can become reluctant to perform if their training consists of only punishments.

What are the top ten breeds of guard dogs?

RottweilersTraining may be required, but in my opinion they are the best guard dogs. They also have ears designed to look frightening. A rottweiler is the classic guard dog.Dobermans They can be good guards, but with poor training become lazy.Pit bulls They require a lot of training, but they have a frightening appearance and a tough bark, so no one messes with them.Collies Good guard dogs when correctly trained.German shepards Training is not always required, but if it is, it will be less than for a Rottweiler.Alsatians They look and act much like a German Shepard, but are not as big.English springer spaniels No proper training is required, but they are very smart and the owner can train them to be an even better guard dog. I myself have one, and i couldn't ask for a better guard dog. They are brilliant dogs and good pets, but because of their love of attention, they are not the best choice for a dog as only a guard.King Charles spaniels From my experience, they work well when paired with an English springer spaniel.Raiwolf: I'm not sure about THE BEST but ten extremely good guard dogs that I know of are: Rottweiler, Doberman, Belgian Shepherd (any kind), German Shepherd, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Hovawart, Bullmastiff, Bull Terrier, Chow Chow, Collie (smooth or rough)P.S. I'm not quite sure where that guy ^ got king Charles spaniel from, you could easily just push them aside :PChow chows require grooming but are good for guarding and watching your home, or so i have heardAny type of Mastiff breed. They are big, and with proper training can make a loyal watch dog, particularly the Neapolitan Mastiff
