Avoid canned and other prepared foods, sauces and dressings as much as possible. These usually contain lots of sodium and refined sugars which can raise blood pressure to dangerous levels. Buy chicken and fish rather than red meat, but check that the chicken contains no more than 4% retained water to avoid a heavy dose of sodium that may have been injected into the chicken by the processor. Emphasize fresh fruits and vegetables and avoid products which are high in saturated (which means animal) fat.
