What is the difference of airsoft and softair?

Airsoft is the name for a class of airguns that are designed to shoot plastic balls called BBs. They are generally less powerful than BB guns and pellet guns.

The game played with those guns is also called airsoft. It consists of shooting each other with airsoft guns. There are many airsoft game variants with some being quite a bit like paintball and others being more like tactical exercises and battle simulations.

Playing airsoft requires protective equipment. At a minimum, ANSI-rated goggles should be used to cover eyes, since a BB can cause severe damage to an unprotected eyball, possibly resulting in blindness. Full face masks are better. Many airsoft venues require them, and some go so far as to require ear protection as well.
