∙ 9y agoIn US Military, oak leaf clusters on most medals this indicates multiple awards of that medal. For the Purple Heart The Air Force and Army put oak leaf clusters on this medal, the Navy and the Marine Corps put gold stars on the medal.

∙ 10y agoIt is a device worn on certain medals and ribbons to denote the sixth award of the same medal (i.e. if you were awarded the Army Commendation Medal 5 times you would wear the ribbon and 4 bronze oak leaf clusters, for the 6th award the ribbon and 1 silver oak leaf cluster).

Starting with the 6th award, a silver oak leaf cluster is worn instead (silver OLC indicating 5 previous awards). The 7th will add another bronze OLC, and so forth. Caveat, this is for the Army. The Naval services use stars instead of OLCs to indicate previous awards.
