I usually estimate a yard (36") to be about the distance from the tip of my finger to the middle of my nose.
So, 39" (meter) would be about from the tip of my finger to the opposite ear.
I also consider 1 pace as being close to a yard. But, I assume one could do super long paces that were close to a meter.
Many dogs (including the tail) might be a meter long.
