Of the 171 species of owls found worldwide, the Burrowing Owl is the only one that lives underground in burrows They are only found in North and South America. In areas like Florida, the Burrowing Owls dig their own burrows, but in the western species they use abandoned prairie dog burrows. The Burrowing Owl is about 9 inches tall and has beautiful yellow eyes. They are active during the day, but also hunt at night when they use their excellent night vision.
