Chipmunks are not to be confused with squirrels. What is true of chipmunks may or may not be true of squirrels. For example, chipmunks partially hibernate a few weeks in November. That is not the word they use nowadays, as the website is a few years older. Cannot remember the current word for partial hibernation. But squirrels simply store acorns for the winter to eat.

Eastern chipmunk: The females give birth to their litter of young midsummer, with four or five young. The babies are born hairless, blind and helpless.

Least chipmunk: They mate in the spring and females give birth to a litter of five or six young around May.

There are 25 species of chipmunk. There is more information about the eastern chipmunk here at second link.

Eastern chipmunks mate in early spring. The female usually has one litter a year with between three and five young. In some areas, a female may have a second litter. The young will come above ground when they are about six weeks old.

An adult chipmunk is 8 1/2 to 11 1/2 inches in length. Its tail is approximately 4 inches in length. The widest part of the body is around the shoulder area, about 1 1/2 inches across. The adult chipmunk weighs approximately 2 1/2 to 5 ounces. There is very little difference between the male, and female, in both colors or weight.

Mating occurs in early Spring, and there is one litter per year. An average of 3 to 5 young are born in May, there have been reported litters as large as ten. The Chipmunk is a social animal, in that both the male and female raise the young.

Chipmunks are omnivorous which means that they eat both plants and animals. The primary diet of chipmunks is grains, bird eggs, nuts (including peanuts!), worms, fungi and insects. Chipmunks are very aggressive in hunting bird eggs and hide where they cannot be seen until the mother bird leaves her eggs.
