Prior Knowlege sometimes referred to schemata..or the ability to bring to mind knowledge that you have previously learned. This is also called a mental image of things.

Piaget (a known psychologist) explained this concept in his theory of constructivism, which explains that through assimilation and accomodation, one acquires knowledge as he or she grows up and interacts with the world. This prior knowlege can help an individual deduce, infer, assume or make a hypothesis of something that he or she does not know for sure.

In class, for example, your teacher may ask you about prior knowlege of heat, and you will explain what you know. Based on what you know about heat then your teacher will teach you about how an element has a boiling point and melting point. Your teacher cannot teach you about these two principles if you do not know, prior to the lecture, about the nature of heat.

I hope I have been clear...
