In recent history, Iraq and Afghanistan after the US invasions are good examples. But today even those countries that are heavily dependent on Another Country's protection and/or financial aid jealously guard their sovereignty and independent decision-making. Just look at countries like North Korea, Israel, Egypt, Ukraine and others that provide their backers with more headaches than influence.

How do you control the dependent variable?

Technically you can't control the dependent variable. However, by controlling and monitoring the Independent variable, (the variable which determines the dependent variable) you could lead the dependent variable to produce favourable results.

What are the independent dependent and control variables?

The independent variable is the thing you are changing/varying. The dependent variable is the thing you are measuring. This variable should be affected by the independent variable. Control variables are anything that must be kept constant. If there are any other factors which affect the dependent variable, then these need to be controlled so that they do not have any significant effect (basically ensuring that you are actually measuring the effects of the independent variable).

What is measured every time you change the independent variable?

Each time the independent variable is changed, the dependent variable is measured. If the independent variable is time, the experimenter chooses an appropriate interval between measurements. This same methodology is used whenever the independent variable is not something the experimenter actually has in his control.
