Emphysema is a long-term, progressive disease of the lungs that primarily causes shortness of breath due to over-inflation of the alveoli (air sacs in the lung).

Cigarette smoking is by far the most dangerous behavior that causes people to develop emphysema, and it is also the most preventable cause.

Treatment for emphysema can take many forms. Different approaches to treatment are available. Generally, a doctor will prescribe these treatments in a step-wise approach, depending on the severity of your condition.

Emphysema is one of the final stages of chonic lung disease caused 98% of the time by smoking. Unfortunatly the lung is too badly damaged at this stage to be cured or show improvement, so the patient is given low concentrations of oxygen (usually 2L/min via nasal cannula) to confer maximum allowable physical function.

A pulmonary rehabilitation program can teach you breathing exercises and techniques that may help reduce your breathlessness and improve your ability to exercise. You'll also receive advice about proper nutrition. In the early stages of emphysema, many people need to lose weight, while people with late-stage emphysema often need to gain weight.
