A D3-1 street sign is a standard specification for the type of street name sign (or blade) to use at stop signs or street sign poles. Its specification and use is contained in the FHWA's MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices). In California (CA MUTCD), the language can be found in Part 2, Section 2D.38, page 2D-19, while the exhibit is on page 2D-59 of the CA MUTCD (http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/traffops/signtech/mutcdsupp/ca_mutcd.htm).
