In vehicles with a five-speed automatic transmission, keeping the gearshift in "D4" will cancel the fifth (or "overdrive") gear keeping the vehicle in fourth gear; this setting is recommended when towing trailers or boats to keep the transmission from overheating.
D4 on an automatic and 5th gear in a manual.
I'm just guessing but if it has always done that then it probably means drive 4th gear which would mean that the car will automatically shift gears up to 4th gear which would be normal, but if it hasn't always done this than there is a problem
its 4th gear in an automatic. its used to cut down on gas usage while driving on the highway or just every day driving. it should automatically engage when in D4 on the shift column.
Tranny failure or shift solenoid failure.
What are the two d's on the gear shift for>
truck start shift is hard to move in gear
If the green light on the instrument panel (which is marked D4), does not come on when you shift into D4, then you will not have 1st and 4th gear. That is one possibility for the problem. If that is the case, you will have to have the switch replaced that controls the light. Sometimes you can move the shifter back and forth to activate the switch to get the light to turn on and then you will have all of your gears working.
No thanks, I do not want to shift to 3rd gear or drive.

My 1998 Nissan sentra wony shift into high gear
Auto transmissionsUse D4 or D with a circle around it (indicating OD for overdrive) almost all the time for best economy and lowest engine wear. There are two exceptions to this. When you are going up a long hill or hauling a heavy load and the transmission keeps shifting in and out of overdrive, it is easier on the vehicle to manually shift it to D3. Also, D3 can be used to slightly slow the vehicle when going downhill - this is called engine braking. Do not forget to shift back into D4 when you are past the hill. D3 always when driving around town after say 55 cruising you should then release the gas slightly and shift to D4 (OD) but don't forget to shift on the highway the extra rpm of running in D3 at higher speeds will burn more gas cause faster engine wear, and also could cause engine to over heat. just a simple answer to your problem.
