The word hemisphere is made from two words: hemi = half, and sphere = a 3-dimensional shape with a boarder equidistant from a center point (aka, a ball). So a hemisphere is one-half of a ball, cut through the middle.

A hemisphere is half of the Earth. For example, the northern hemisphere is the land from the equator and above. The southern is all south of the equator. There are also the western and eastern hemispheres, divided by 0 to 180 degrees latitude.

In geography, hemisphere refers to one-half of the earth. It can be the northern or Southern Hemisphere divided at the equator, or the eastern hemisphere, east of the Prime Meridian to 180 degree longitude, or the Western Hemisphere, west of the Prime Meridian to 180 degree longitude.
