An electromagnet is a device design for the particular purpose. It uses electric current specifically to act as a magnet.

Many electric devices use a magnetic field as part of thier function. Even an electric motor creates an alternating magnetic field to do its work.

A simple electrical device that moves a metal plunger is a solenoid. A door be works like that.

A magnet made by passing electricity through a coil of wire is called an electromagnet. Just the coil of wire is not enough. You also need a coil the wire around a magnetizable metal such as iron or nickel to actually become magnetic.

The field can be intensified by wrapping the wire into a coil and further intensified by placing a steel core inside the coil.
