There's a couple of types.

1: character dialogue mid-way through a paragraph. e.g. He stared out of the window and darted his eyes around the streets, he turned and said '(insert speech here)' and turned back, keeping his eyes open for anything out of the ordinary.

2: Spaced between paragraphs and other lines of dialogue, making it an easy read.

e.g.

(Insert paragraph here)

"(speech)"

"(another characters speech below)"

"(etc)"
