Bacteria are able to reproduce on their own while viruses need a host to "hijack" so they can reproduce. Bacteria have metabolisms, catabolic and anabolic biochemical reactions going on in their cells all the time. Viruses do not. Bacteria can grow in size to a certain extent while viruses do not change in this regard. The definition of living things classify bacteria as a living thing, while viruses are not.

1. Bacteria itself is unicellular, whereas viruses do not contain any cells, nor are they a cell.

2. Ribosomes are present in Bacteria - the organelle required to synthesize proteins. Proteins are a needed part of any cell's life cycle. Viruses do not create nor require protein, although the DNA / RNA of viruses contains it.

3. Reproduction is asexual in bacteria and not all bacteria cause disease, whereas the virus reproduces through parasitic and destructive means, and will always cause disease, whether noticeable or no. Some viruses have been known to destroy brain tumors, however, and are useful in genetic engineering.

What is a difference between bacteria and viruses that shows that bacteria are living organims and viruses are not?

Bacteria metabolize ingested nutrients. Viruses do not do this. Bacteria reproduce by fusion. A virus needs a host to reproduce. Bacteria exchange gases with the environment. A virus does do this. A bacteria is motile in many cases. Flagella. Viruses must depend on the current in solution. As you see viruses do not have any of the markers of living organisms, but some biologists do not fully agree that viruses are not a sort of living organism.
