My child's pediatric cardiologist has a D.O. instead of an M.D. at the end of her name. What does D.O. stand for?

The D.O. after the pediatric cardiologist's name stands for Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. This is another type of medical physician just like a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) that has completed four years of medical school and residency/fellowship to become a board certified pediatric cardiologist.

D.O. after a doctor's name stands for Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. This type of physician has the same rights and privileges as a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.).

Osteopathic medical schools are another type of medical school in the United States. Some osteopathic medical schools require a slightly lower average college GPA for acceptance than allopathic schools but the curricula contain the same classes plus some training in physical manipulation, known as OMT (osteopathic manipulative treatment) which tends to be more specifically targeted (and often applied with less force) than chiropractic treatments. Osteopathic physicians can take their own board exams or the more conventional boards, train in osteopathic or conventional residencies and are fully licensed as physicians who can admit patients to hospitals, do surgery, and write prescriptions.

Doctor of Osteopathy. The doctor didn't go to a school of Western medicine, but went to a school of osteopathy. State laws give them the same rights and privileges as MDs.
