I have two off the top of my head:

He was partially deaf his entire life. And his only invention that worked perfectly the very first time was the phonograph. Ironically, it was his only invention that he didn't think would work at all!

It was invented because Thomas Edison's competitor Nikola Tesla had AC electricty (Edison had DC) and AC was cheaper but, more dangerous.
