The independent variable is the factor changed by the scientists.The dependent variable (think of it like this: it dependson the results of the experiment) is what is measured.
The "control" factor. (The factor being tested is referred to as the "treatment" factor.)
If there is a factor that confuses the result of an experiment, I would call that a design flaw in the experiment. It might also be an uncontrolled variable.
