The gray fox mates in February or March, bearing young in April or May -- a gestation period of about 51 days. The 3 to 7 pups are dark brown in color; they are born blind and remain so for about 10 days. The young venture out of the den after about 5 weeks, and are usually weaned by 10 weeks. The father provides food for the entire family during this period. The family remains together until late fall, then separates. All foxes generally remain solitary throughout the winter.
Pregnancy-Grey foxes give birth in a variety of places. 1-10 cubs (normally about 4) are born usually during mid-March and mid-June. Cubs- Dispersal occurs between January and February. The cubs start to hunt at about 4 months. They stay within parent's home range longer than other foxes. Adulthood-adult foxes find a vixen to mate with and have cubs. The adult grey fox's vegetarian based part of their diet consists of nuts, grass, grains and fruit. Their meat based part of their diet consists of small mammals.
They can live up to 12 years in captivity and 14 years in the wild.
