In Virginia the best in the state in 2009-2010 was 1:49.78 for boys. Of the 5308 boys that ran the 800 in at least one meet that reported it's results to milestat.com only 87 ran under 2:00 at least once. 2:17 was the time for the 1000th best run, so as you can see less than 20 percent of high school kids in Virginia (which is probably fairly indicative of most states) can run under a 2:17.

When you consider that these are times of only track kids and not the general high school population I wouldn't be sad with a time anywhere under 2:45 if you haven't raced the distance before.

For girls 2:10.55 was the fastest time in the state and only 40 girls got under 2:20. The 1000th (out of 4057) ranked girl ran a 2:54. I don't think a girl should be displeased with anything under 3:05 for a first race.

Depending on the state, it can vary. In Wisconsin, for example, under 55 is potential 4x400m Relay stuff, under 52 will win you a couple meets, under 51 is a likely conference champion, and under 50 is a State Finals time. But to win, you have to run a mid-48 to high-47 to be a guarantee.

Well, I am in grade 9, and I was able to run the 1,200 meters in 4:47 seconds. A good average for a high school student is to strive to get around or under a 4-minute time if you plan to run competitively.

good 1600 times vary from year to year, as a freshman anywhere from 5:30 to 5:10 is respectable, as a sophomore anywhere from 5:05 to 4:57 is pretty good, as a junior running in the low 4:50s to breaking 4:50 is good and as a senior breaking 4:50 to the low 4:30s would be considered good for the normal distance runner in high school.

Anything below 2:00 should get you to state unless you are in a huge conference with many fast runners. 1:50-1:55 is a great time to aim for.

i run a 2:04 for the 800 and I'm a junior. the state qualifying time for the 800 in my state (Illinois) is 1:57.

i'd say 2:10 is a good time to get as a senior.

Depends. If you are just about fit, around 6 mins. If you are built, you could probably do it in 4 mins 15 secs.
