A hetaira was an educated and sophisticated courtesan in ancient Greece, particularly in Athens. Unlike typical women of the time, hetairas were known for their intelligence, charm, and ability to engage in intellectual conversations, often attending symposia and social gatherings. They provided companionship and entertainment to male patrons and sometimes had significant influence in social and political matters. Hetairas were distinct from wives, as they were not bound by the same social expectations and could enjoy greater freedom.
