a hydrophobic tail is a part of the main component of the cell membrane i.e, a phospholipid that consists of a sugar , phosphate and two fatty acid chains (lipids) . the phosphate group is hydrophyllic i.e it has affinity for water. this hydrophyllic phosphate is somewhat spherical and forms the head of the phospholipid. the two fatty acid chains are linear and form the tail. common experience tells us that fats are not soluble in water i.e, they are hydrophobic (water hating) which form the hydrophobic tail of the phospho lipid. when present in the membrane the phospholipids are arranged in such a way that the heads of all the phospholipids lie towards the non cytosolic end and the tails lie towards the tails of the other phospholipids in the next layer. thus all the tails phospholipid bilayer lie towards each other and remain always away from water thus leading to the name hydrophobic tail.
