An 'iron lung' is a machine that enables a patient to breathe, when the patient's respiratory muscles are paralyzed. It was invented by Dr Dinker and associates in 1928. A more efficient unit was made several years later. It is most famous for use during the polio epidemics in the 1940s and 50s, when literally thousands of people, many children, had polio. The device works by placing the patient inside, with only the head outside the machine. The machine then creates alternating negative and positive pressure to create 'breathing' for the patient. The negative pressure inside the unit inflates the lungs, and the positive pressure deflates them- ie inspiration and expiration. A negative pressure ventilator, often referred to as an iron lung can be defined as a form of medical ventilator medical that enables a person to breathe when normal muscle control has been lost or the work of breathing exceeds the person's ability. The iron lung was replaced by respirators and nebulizers.
The ventilator originates from the Iron Lung which was invented by Philip Drinker and Louis Agassiz Shaw. In 1931, the Iron Lung was improved to become the ventilator by John Haven Emerson.
