A keyed shaft or Keyway is method, based on a machined keyway in shaft, to attach something to the shaft and associated bore. A fitted key is inserted into a slot that is machined into the shaft. Although a machined keyway does result in a weaker shaft, it has it's applications. As in a lawn mower engine shaft. Theoretically the key will give way and save the shaft if you hit something with the blade. The negatives of a keyed shaft are that it can be deformed over time and result is a loose drive.
A shaft tomb or shaft grave is a type of burial structure formed from a deep and narrow shaft sunk into natural rock. Burials were then placed at the bottom!!!!!
The shaft alone minimum is 30 Inches and the Head + Shaft minimum is 40 inches!

1. This is due to the stress concentration at the corners of the key way and reduction in the cross-sectional area of the shaft. It, other words the torsional strength of the shaft is reduced. 2. In case the key way is too long and the key is of sliding type, then the angle of twist increased. So it is actually assumed that the strength of the keyed shaft is 75% of the solid shaft.
The purpose of keying the flywheel with the shaft is to keep it spinning at the same rate as the shaft, and also to have the magnets on the flywheel lined up correctly with the strokes of the engine so that the spark plug will produce a spark at the very top of the compression stroke and in turn will cause the combustion stroke to take place.
Keyed Up was created in 1983.

You speed the word as 'miskeyed'. When you put the prefix with the word keyed, you do not use the two 's' as when you say the word 'miss'.

The shaft is either "keyed" or splined to turn the wheel. There is probably just a nut or bolt keeping it on the shaft. Just loosen it up and hopefully the factory put some grease on the shaft so the wheel didn't rust to the shaft and it should just slide off. If it won't come off then LIGHTLY (ask me how i know) tap the inside of the wheel and see if it will slide off. If not then there might be a couple of holes in the wheel for a wheel puller. If not you'll have take it in and have a shop remove it.
Blade adapter from a MTD or Yard Machine seemed to fit the keyed shaft. Center bolt is 3/8" with 24 threads per inch. My issue is the shaft on the Predator is 1/2" longer than my original Yard machine, Briggs and Straton. So I either need to cut the shaft off, or raise the motor on a half inch thick spacer plate to get the blade at the same height it was on the original motor.
