The primary purpose of a lighthouse keeper is to maintain the light in the lighthouse, to ensure that ships are warned of dangerous rocks and reefs.

They also need to maintain the structure itself that actually holds the lantern. They need to check for wear and tear, paint the tower, and possibly communicate to ships. Many of these tasks are eliminated with modern, automated lighthouses, although maintenance of the building itself is still necessary.

To stay in the lighthouse and check for ships that cross pass or is coming. So they have to stay awake for a while because there ships on duty like amost every hour so they have an very important duty.

ADDED:

There primary duty was not monitoring shipping, but ensuring the lamp was lit every night, and keeping it in working order. In many places now, and certainly around the British Isles, there are no lighthouse keepers on regular station any more. The lights have been automated, monitored remotely, and the buildings are visited only for maintenance and repairs.

A lighthouse keepers duties are vast. A lighthouse keeper must for example keep a light up and running for boats to see at night.

ADDED: Many lighthouses now are un-manned. They are operated automatically, monitored remotely, and visited only for maintenance and repairs.

Lighthouses are usually operated by the government. Whether it is a local or national government depends on the country.

Some lighthouses are also privately owned.
