Why can a proper scrum still be played in union but not league?
The league scrums are meeting the requirements of the league code. The build a of the players is not as important in league as in union as league requires props and second rows who are sprinters rather that the huge pushing machines employed in union. When league started they removed the flankers (wing forwards) to make the game more open.
