Best Answer

Mechanical agitation is shaking with a machine.

Examples include:

* magnetic stir plates, which use a Teflon-coated metal and magnets to automatically stir reactions. * sonicators, which transmit ultrasonic waves through a water bath to vibrate solutions.

I have used and assisted in the design of a reactor that we would use to make a sulfur slurry. The agitator was no more than a motor that provided constant mixing oil to eventually provide sulfurized cutting oil. The oil was churned by the paddle on the inside of the reactor while being pumped through heat exchangers that would ultimately heat the churned oil to about 240F. At that point we knew for sure the sulfur would melt. While the mechanical pumping of the oil coupled with the churning provide us the guarantee the sulfur would melt entirely. Once sample were taken and we knew for sure the sulfur had completely melted we opened a 20,000 gallon tank and slowly via the churning and mixing sulfurized the oil.

Hope this helps
